The Upstairs Gallery will be offering studio and exhibition space to rent from Autumn 2018.
Artist in Residence:
Very light and bright studio space available for working in, holding workshops and or holding an exhibition. Ample wall space. Three easels available for use, including a portable one. Tressel table and folding chairs. Arm chair and small sofa. Washroom with small basin and WC. Kettle for making drinks but no kitchen. However, the Gallery is well placed in the heart of Victoria, surrounded by a great choice of eateries. The studio space is on the first floor accessed by a spiral staircase, sorry, unsuitable for people with mobility difficulties. Large canvasses can be hoisted up over the balcony. The space is available from the beginning of November until the end of March. It can be rented for one week to three months max.
All marketing and printing for exhibitions and workshops to be done by the artist.
We do not supply artists materials but there are some very good art shops on Malta, and a less extensive range available on Gozo. Shops on Malta will usually deliver to Gozo. Good quality canvasses can be bought on Gozo. We would advise you bring your own favourite brushes.
Although there is no accommodation on site we can recommend some very lovely places to stay to suit all budgets. Victoria is at the heart of the island and all bus routes start and end here, so it’s no trouble being in any of the villages. The bus terminus is a short walk from the gallery. The winter months are a lovely time to visit the island, cooler, greener, less hussle and bustle. There are still visitors but they tend to be people who are here for the wonderful walking or a slower pace of life compared to the busy sweltering summer months.
Gozo has much inspiration and has long been a draw for artists, the wonderful crumbling houses, narrow alley ways, stunning coast line, historical buildings and much more. A month is barely long enough to explore all it has to offer. The cosmopolitan city of Valletta only an hour and a half away (by ferry and bus, shorter by car) with it’s wealth of beautiful architecture and a smattering of art galleries. Lots to see and do. Also the city of Mdina is well worth a visit.
Your investment is €100 per week for the space
The Upstairs Gallery will be open to customers as usual, during normal opening hours, using the downstairs area, the mezzanine floor and part of the first floor. It is up to the artist to choose their own working hours.
